Lay of the Land: BAJI Organizing in the South

Organizing in the southern United States is critically important because we see many of the nation’s most regressive and oppressive policies played out with a vigor and style uncommon to the rest of the country.   This is true both for historical reasons –as in the US south’s long legacy white supremacy as a means of social control- but also for reason rooted very much in the relatively recent growth of immigrant communities in the region.

The Mandela School

The Mandela School of Science & Technology is one of Siemens’ biggest social investments ever. In the remote village of Mvezo, Nelson Mandela’s birthplace, students do not have the chance to attend high school – unless they moved away. This will change when the school opens in early 2014. It will allow 700 children and young adults to change their lives for the better.
